CHAE
ARTIST NOTE
Artist Chae Su-pyung, born in Suncheon, is widely recognized both domestically and internationally as the "Anchovy Artist."
In the 1990s, his works focused on nature, depicting subjects like trees, wind, and waves, with his iconic piece being Pine Tree. Starting in 2010, he shifted his focus to themes of love, hope, and communication, creating works featuring books, flowers, and yellow butterflies. A representative piece from this period is Space_Book, Butterfly & Flower.
Since settling in Yeosu in 2014, Chae has used Yeosu's anchovies as a central motif in his art. Through this subject, he transformed the essence of humanity (人間) into avant-garde expressions, creating uniquely original works that elevate everyday life into symbolic anchovies.
His recent solo exhibitions include a series titled:
- Anchovy Me (鱴我)
- Anchovy – Absurdity
- Anchovy – Dreams and Journeys
- Stories of Our Lives Reflected in Water_2024.
